The structure

Four standalone seasons, four sessions each

Each season has its own goal and works on its own. Open any session below to see what it covers.

Season 1

Foundations

Recognize · Observe · Pray · Rest
Weeks 1–4

Goal: Help participants recognize their unwanted thoughts and begin working with them — especially useful for groups facing anxiety, depression, rumination, or obsessive thinking.

  • Normalize the mental struggle: unwanted thoughts are part of being human, not a lack of faith
  • Distinguish between having a thought, believing it, and acting on it
  • Observe thoughts without judgment using the "Notice and Name" practice
  • Pray honestly, including lament, and practice mental rest as a spiritual discipline
The four sessions
01A Restless and Noisy Mind

Recognizing the thoughts that steal our peace.

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.Romans 12:2 · also Philippians 4:7

  • Everyone struggles with unwanted thoughts — you are not alone, and you are not "less Christian" for having them
  • Having a thought is not believing it, and believing it is not acting on it
  • The mind can change: neuroplasticity and Romans 12:2 point the same direction
  • Different types of thoughts call for different strategies
02Know Your Thoughts

Observation without judgment — the first step toward change.

Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.Psalm 139:23–24 · also Proverbs 4:23

  • Observing is not judging — compassionate curiosity beats critical alarm
  • Your thoughts are not your identity; you are the one who observes them
  • The "Notice and Name" practice: "I'm having the thought that…"
03Pray Your Thoughts

From lament to praise — honest conversations with God.

Pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge.Psalm 62:8 · also Philippians 4:6, Romans 8:26

  • God can handle brutal honesty — the Psalms are full of lament
  • Lament, confession, petition, gratitude: all are valid forms of prayer
  • Prayer is conversation, not monologue
  • When words run out, the Spirit intercedes
04Rest Your Thoughts

Mental Sabbath — rest as a spiritual discipline.

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.Matthew 11:28 · also Psalm 46:10, Exodus 20:8

  • Mental Sabbath is a commandment, not a suggestion
  • Active and passive rest are both necessary
  • Sleep and mental health are directly connected
  • Resting the mind is an act of trust — releasing control to God
Season 2

Transformation

Untangle · Focus · Capture · Calm
Weeks 5–8

Goal: Move participants from observing their thoughts to actively reshaping them, with tools that are both biblical and supported by cognitive neuroscience.

  • Identify common cognitive distortions in their thinking
  • Practice biblical meditation as a tool for mental transformation
  • Use the Stop–Question–Replace technique for thought management
  • Understand and regulate their nervous system for mental calm
The four sessions
05Untangle Your Thoughts

Separating truth from lies — identifying distortions.

You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.John 8:32 · also John 16:13

  • Cognitive distortions are common thinking errors, not sin — but not truth either
  • The enemy plants lies; the Spirit guides us into truth
  • The "Is it true? Is it helpful? Is it necessary?" test
  • Replace each lie with a specific biblical truth
06Focus Your Thoughts

The power of biblical meditation — setting your mind on things above.

Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right… think about such things.Philippians 4:8 · also Colossians 3:2

  • Biblical meditation fills the mind with truth rather than emptying it
  • Meditation is intentional rumination on what is true
  • Philippians 4:8 works as a mental filter
  • Scripture memorization makes truth portable
07Capture Your Thoughts

2 Corinthians 10:5 in action — taking every thought captive.

We take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.2 Corinthians 10:5 · also James 4:7

  • The battle for the mind is real spiritual warfare
  • Taking a thought captive is not suppressing it
  • The three-step strategy: Stop → Question → Replace
  • We fight from victory, not for victory
08Calm Your Thoughts

Mind-body connection — regulating your nervous system.

Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you?1 Corinthians 6:19 · also Psalm 131:2

  • The mind-body connection is real and God-designed
  • The three states of the nervous system: calm, mobilized, shutdown
  • Somatic practices: breath, movement, posture
  • Sleep, nutrition and exercise directly affect mental health
Season 3

Renewal

Repair · Set aside · Discard · Integrate
Weeks 9–12

Goal: Turn the focus toward healing and recovery — showing that broken thinking patterns can be repaired, and that faith and medical care belong together.

  • Understand that healing from destructive thought patterns is possible
  • Practice rest and mental boundaries as spiritual disciplines
  • Release old patterns and make space for new thinking
  • Embrace both faith and medical treatment without shame
The four sessions
09Repair Your Thoughts

Healing broken thinking patterns.

The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.Psalm 34:18 · also Psalm 147:3

  • Damaged thinking patterns are not permanent damage
  • Healing takes time and patience — that is normal
  • God is the healer; we cooperate through prayer, practice, professional help and community
  • Progress matters more than perfection
10Set Aside Your Thoughts

Creating mental boundaries and rest.

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.Matthew 11:28 · also Exodus 20:8

  • Some thoughts should be set aside rather than fought
  • Mental boundaries are as healthy as physical ones
  • Rest is biblical, not laziness
  • You choose what gets your mental focus — this is stewardship
11Discard Your Thoughts

Letting go and making space for renewal.

Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal.Philippians 3:13–14 · also 2 Corinthians 5:17

  • Not every thought deserves your attention
  • Old patterns once served a purpose — you can outgrow them
  • Discarding the old creates space to fill intentionally
  • Freedom comes from release
12Faith & Medication as Allies

Integration of spiritual and medical healing.

A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.Proverbs 17:22 · also James 5:14–15

  • Medication is not a spiritual weakness — it is stewardship of the body
  • Faith and medicine work together: both/and, not either/or
  • God works through doctors, therapists and psychiatrists
  • Accepting help is itself an act of faith
Season 4

Integration

Sit · Care · Build · Celebrate
Weeks 13–16

Goal: Bring the whole series together — helping participants live at peace with their thoughts and leave with practices they can keep using.

  • Understand that presence and acceptance are powerful
  • Recognize the connection between the nervous system and spiritual peace
  • Build a personalized toolkit for ongoing mental health and healing
  • Celebrate the growth and transformation of the journey
The four sessions
13Sit With Your Thoughts

Learning to be present without fighting.

Be still, and know that I am God.Psalm 46:10 · also John 14:27

  • Resistance creates struggle; acceptance creates peace
  • You can sit with difficult thoughts without being controlled by them
  • Presence is a spiritual discipline
  • Acceptance does not mean approval — it means peace
14Nervous System & Faith

Understanding the body's role in peace.

Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit?1 Corinthians 6:19 · also Colossians 3:15

  • The nervous system is part of God's design
  • Sleep, movement and rest calm the nervous system and the spirit
  • Spiritual practices calm the body; body care calms the spirit
  • Wholeness includes body, mind and spirit
15Build Your Toolkit

Creating personalized resources for ongoing healing.

I have told you all this, so that you may have peace in me.John 16:33 · also Jude 20

  • Your toolkit is unique to you
  • Include spiritual, physical, emotional and relational tools
  • Review and update the toolkit regularly
  • Share it — what works for you may help someone else
16Final Integration & Celebration

Honoring the journey and looking forward.

I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.2 Timothy 4:7 · also Colossians 3:12

  • Honor how far the group has come
  • Integration is a lifetime process
  • Community supports ongoing healing — no one walks alone
  • The work continues, and participants now have the tools
How it works

The seasons build on each other, but none of them require the others. Choose the rhythm that fits your group.

16 weeks

Straight through

Run Seasons 1 to 4 back to back as one continuous journey, from recognizing thoughts to celebrating the change.

4 weeks at a time

Season by season

Run one season, switch to another topic series or your regular group format, then come back for the next season later in the year.

Pick one

Single season

Start with the season that matches where your group is — Renewal for a group in recovery, Foundations for a group new to the subject.

Every session follows the same shape

Topic exposition (10 min), conversational guide (20–30 min), and closing with reflection, a weekly practice, and prayer.

The script is written out for you

Read the exposition as written or adapt it in your own words. Discussion questions are ready to use.

Each season opens with a recap

Participants who join mid-series can follow along without having attended earlier seasons.
